EIGHT KOS MINAR CHATRI-AJMER

GENRAL VIEW

The Kos minar was built by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1575 CE for administrative convenience and also for the comfort of travelers. Such tapering minars were built to mark a distance of every kos (3.20 km). The minar stands on a masonry platform and is built of rubble stone and is octagonal in plan, but turns circular in shaft as it rises upwards. Along with administrative purposes. minars were used to indicate the path to merchants and pilgrims going to the sacred Dargah of Ajmer. These Minars appear to be as solid structures standing on the surface of earth with circumference of 8.56 m.
